Popular car registrations

June 29th, 2011

Personal Car Registrations have always been popular in the u.k. The industry was started by private companies and transfers were administered by the DVLA. Registration number were sourced from old vehicles and transfreed to the buyer’s car or motorcycle. The DVLA entered the market and started to sell unissued numbers which had not been used in the normal registration process. They sell the four formats of registration that have been used since 1903, namely ageless, suffix, prefix and newstyle. These all follow the rules of all registration numbers. It is now being proposed that cherished numbers should be outside this sytem and any combination should be made available to buy.The format of private reg plates has always had to follow either the present registration number sequence or one of the three previous convention. It seems that this may all change shortly and cherished numbers will break away from the conventional registration number system and will be able to have any combination of letters and numbers. How do you decide if number plates are cherished or if they are private. Historically they were called Cherished Numbers as the transfer procedure was involved, expensive and slow, each number had to be removed from the old vehicle bearing it and transferred to the receiving vehicle, at one point you actually had to be the registered keeper of both vehicles to effect a transfer. When the dvla entered the marketplace selling unissued registration numbers, the  purchase and transfer of registrations became much easier, exclusivity was lost and the term private number plates became more widely used than cherished number plates.
